50 Years of Mary Poppins
Even though I was born 25years after Mary Poppins was originally released, it has always been a favourite film of mine.
How could you not fall in love with Mary Poppins & her quirky magical ways.
My favourite Scene is when Mary Poppins, Bert & the Children jump into Bert's chalk drawing on the pavement entering an animated countryside which to me is perfect & quintessentially British.
The best part about this scene though is the one word that we have all learnt & came to love..... Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Mary Poppin's defines this word as "something to say when you have nothing to say".
The roots to this word has been defined as the following:
Super = Above
Cali = Beauty
Fragilistic = Delicate
Expiali = To Atone
Docious = Educable
Which sums up roughly in the sentence "Atoning for educability through delicate beauty".
* Mary Poppins and Mrs. Banks never spoke to each other in the film.
*In the large queue of applicants for the Nannies job at the start of the film many of them were actually men in drag.
*Matthew Garber was afraid of Heights so for every time they filmed the Tea Party scence somebody offered to pay him 10 cents for every take as an incentive.
*Walt Disney considered Mary Poppins (1964) one of the crowning achievements of his career.
*Walt Disney had not personally attended a studio première since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) in 1937. His next première appearance was for Mary Poppins in 1964
